  1. Here is an easy way to check US airports.  If you go to the link below, you can enter a state, city or county and it will list all of the airports (both public and private).  There are hundreds, if not thousands, of private airstrips in the US.

  2. Thats a good question, I dont know of any.

Most airports are operated and owned by companies (Twin Cities, MN metro area primarily owned by MAC).

I bet some of the smaller airports on the outskirts are privately owned, but I dont know for sure

  3. There are several air parks that have a small runway with several houses and the garages are hangers and you're driveway is a taxi way, those are privately owned.

  4. Check the aeronautical charts. Private airports are everywhere if you look. There are thousands. Private airports are usually marked PVT  or "Private". Most are small fields suitable for small planes and are only usable by the owner and invited guests. Some are privately owned but open to public use, such as Santa Paula, CA (KSZP). Then there are private airports owned by companies with a fleet of private jets and turboprops, or customers who fly such aircraft. A good example of a company owned airport is the one operated by Peabody Coal (38AZ) in Arizona.  And most heliports are actually privately owned too (by hospitals, for example). Then there are private "airparks", with residences on them that cater to small airplane owners.  There are hundreds of them. And overseas, particularly in the Middle East, there are private airports that can handle up to Boeing 747's owned by wealthy individuals.

p.s. if you're teaching it, I guess you had better bone up on the subject!!! Not all private fields have managers or full-time personnel, but many do. Go here for a searchable database: http://www.airnav.com/airports/search.ht...
