His main discovery was the process of genetics; how traits are passed from generation to generation. Through careful experiments and observation he concluded that parents could pass on versions (alleles) of a given trait. He studied pea plants and a few of the traits were pea and pod size and shape, plant height, and flower color.

He calculated the likelihood of certain traits from crosses of purebreds and hybrids. (Google the term Punnett Square)
