  1. Each department is different.

Federal Bureau of Prisons does not allow protective vests, baton, pepper spray.  On the duty belt is a radio, flashlight, handcuffs, and keys.  Vests are not permitted to be worn even if purchased by the officer.  This was brought to light by the recent stabbing of a correctional officer in Atwater, CA.

CA Dept of Corrections- each officer has a personal alarm, expandible baton, pepper spray, radio, flashlight, handcuffs, keys, latex gloves and other pieces on their duty belt.  Also required to wear a stab resistant vest.

  2. Hello Taryn. I work in an Ohio prison, so I will give you what we carry in our state.

I have a set of handcuffs, a PR 24 baton, OC pepper spray, a two way radio, a CPR face mask, surgical gloves (in case of body fluids) in a carry case on my belt, about 1 1/2 pounds of keys, a cut down tool ( for attempted suicides), a man down alarm ( goes off if I am on my back for 10 seconds or longer), a duty belt, belt keepers, baton holder, key holder, radio and cuff cases, pepper spray quick release holder, a watch and ink pens in black ink ( very important for those two), access to an issued breathing apparatus at my station and an optional pair of shake down ( cut proof) gloves for searches and shakedowns.

The only other items that can be issued is when on a transport outside of the institution or on perimeter detail, a .38 revolver, 18 rounds of ammunition, an 870 shotgun with 4 rounds of high brass 4 buck ammuntion and assorted holsters and speedloader pouches to carry it all.

As noted above me, no one carries a firearm inside the wire. It would be too easy to have it taken and used against you or other Officers. All weapons are kept in a ready armory just outside the entrance building and also outside the wire.

Best of luck and I hope this can be useful to you

  3. Different prisons/jails allow officers to carry various items.

MOST allow, handcuffs, pepper spray/mace, batons, radio, keys, flashlight and that's about it.

NO correctional officer/jailer carries a handgun, bullets or knives inside the prison/jail.  That could be a felony charge against the officer.

IF they work outside the prison such as patrol, or transporting inmates, then they will have a handun, bullets and possibly a shotgun.

Officers in towers/guard shacks will have handguns, shotuns and some semi-automatic weapons as well as possibly non-lethal like bean bags, flash grenades, smoke bombs, etc...

Some prison now have Taser guns, stun guns  and electric shields, but they are not carried daily, just for emergencies/riots, etc....

  4. They all carry mace or pepper spray and handcuffs.
