What all do I need to do while buying a car from a relative?

I'm buying a car from my uncle. He wants to keep his old license plates, so I need to get new ones. Also he lives in another state(MA), which means I have to get mine from my state (NJ). Also, this is my first car, so I need to get insurance.

What do I need to get first (and next)?

  1. you need to contact the DMV and talk to them about it.

    and yes, get insurance. lol.

  2. I've gone through the same thing -- still a bit painful, here is the resource help me a lot.http://carinsurance.expertsupport.info/a...

  3. 1. You get your own loan to establish credit.

    2. You obtain a temp. licence, and insurance to drive it home.

    3. Obtain a licence and insurance in your state. <}:-})

  4. i bought my car from my stepdad and all we did was go to the court house to get my license plate for it and paid and since its staying in the family it was very cheap...and thats all there was to that...and you can either the license plate or the insurance....i got the the license plate first

  5. when you take the title to dmv to register the car you will need the signed pink slip from him. also there is a box that you can check that your uncle "gifted" the car to you (this will save on the transfer of title fee) when you register the car dmv will either give you the plates on the spot, or they will mail them to you. make sure you tell them that he is retaining his plates. you will probably need to show proof of insurance before they will let you register the car. you can get insurance over the phone or the internet as long as you have the VIN number.
