  1. If you are looking for a good serious surround sound system to complement a new big LCD or Plasma TV, it would be worth hiring someone.  There are alot of differnt connections to consider and its very confusing for the uninitiated.  Also true surround sound has wires going all over the place, and sometimes it looks best behind the walls.

Bose has a system that is pretty easy to set up that is all set up near the TV, but I don't think it sounds as good as  true surround sound.

  2. You need a receiver and speakers. Most receivers today can drive multiple surround sound speakers (usually front left, center and right, rear satellites and a woofer). They'll say something like Dolby 5.1 or 6.1. Just connect your sound source (TV, cable box) to the receiver input, and the speakers to the outputs.

Onkyo and Denon have inexpensive options and good reputations. You can spend anywhere from $300 for a whole system (this will not impress any audiophile but may be enough for you) to 10's of thousands.

  3. I most cases a small Home Theater in a box system will be good for people who just would like to have surround sound. If you are not real picky then you could even get a system at Walmart. These are not the best you can get, far from it, but for the price of some of these systems they get the job done pretty well. They are super easy to hook up. Some of them have big color connection diagrams and color coded wires. if you want something simple and inexpensive this could be the route to take.

I would look for one that is an all in one with a built in DVD player.

If you already have a DVD player and want to add a nice surround sound system to it. Then you can buy a nice Denon, Onkyo or Yamaha receiver and get a nice 5.1 channel speaker system to go along with it. Infinty, JBL, Polk Audio, all make nice speaker systems. Some of the systems will be all packaged together with a receiver all you add is the DVD player, TV and cables and your good to go. It really depends on your budget.

    That covers your needs.

Now hooking it up. I will cover the most basic of hook ups and also the most flexible as far as using the system.

Connect the DVD player to your TV using the component (red green and blue) connectors or HDMI if it has one.

Then connect the DVD player to your receiver using a digital coax cable (usually the connector is orange or black and you can use a standard RCA style cable) or the Toslink which is a fiber optic connection. It looks like a little 1/4inch square connector.

Now connect your speaker system to your receiver and Enjoy.

If you follow the instruction on all your components carefully ( paying close attention to the connection diagrams) you should be good to go.
