  3. Keep in mind that a psychiatrist is a medical doctor, so you will need to go to med school after completing your Bachelor's degree. Med school is four years, plus residency in psychiatry, which is around 4-5 years. So you are looking at a minimum of 12 years of post-secondary education. Once you have completed your residency, you will need to complete the licensing exams. Make sure this is the path you really want to pursue. I would suggest volunteering at a psychiatric ward of a hospital or a tertiary mental health care facility.
