  1. Try getting an experienced rider(or yourself) to ride the pony & see what it reacts like to a crop or get some experienced rider(or yourself) to wrok with the pony & kick  with both legs really hard!I have this problem with the horse I use at lessons & he is huge but, I switched horses because I"m now more advanced!

  2. Do you really believe you should give a novice a whip?

The pony is proberly just younge and should be recently broken in (if not I am discusted it would of been broken in so young) it properly finds it hard to do any strenuous work, you may need to work out a fitness program for the pony and the girl. Maybe the pony doesnt know what it's being asked to do?

Suggest sending it off to be schooled maybe?

  3. the pony needs schooling properly on the lunge. it is far too young

for novice riders and needs professional work on it. it doesn't sound to

me that you are qualified. you can not teach a novice rider on a poorly

or not schooled pony. you are being cruel. no novice rider should have

a stick or spurs. there may also be something physically wrong with the pony. i suggest you speak to their parents and tell them to have the pony looked over and schooled properly. older ponies are much better for novice riders. my suggestion would be to school it on a bit and sell it.

  4. they did illegalize spurs that have the pointy wheels on them, so people made spurs without them. so spurs are safe. try the spurs and see what happens. if the same thing with the whip happens with the spurs, then just give the horse more oats before every lesson. oats give the horse or pony energy.

  5. The poor pony is so young and if people are flapping on it no wonder it is badly confused and badly behaved.  The pony needs taking back to the beginning, being lunged and ridden lightly in the school by a slightly older but not much bigger rider who has a bit more experience.

The pony should be checked for foot, back, mouth problems by the vet.  I am wondering if the pony is fat and might be suffering from laminitis.  You do not say how big the pony is.  Or what his or her background is.  If he has laminitis he would be "lazy"  he or she would be feeling like she has had to walk over hot coals.  It is an extremely painful disease.  Restricted grazing, stable rest, cold water baths on the feet, special shoeing and more excersise when it is feeling better, with Bute is the only treatment.

You yourself should not be teaching these girls as you are not qualified or sufficiently insured against accidents which may be caused by something you instruct them to do.  Horses usually BUCK when hit with the stick, not rear.

  6. Try doing some lounging with the pony before she gets on her. She may have had bad whip experiences or maybe they don't know how to use it correctly. its there for an aide and some horses you can just hold it and threaten to use it. Maybe you should get on the pony and ride her around with a whip, as rearing when a whip is in hand may make the girl fearful and make her stop, being what the pony wants. If you get on the pony and ride use a whip and if she rears, don't give in and get the horse to move forward. It'd be better if you did it instead of her novice owners. :] any more Qs ask and i'll help out best i can. but defently do some groundwork to teach her not to fear the whip.

  7. ask the get to be nice to the housres

  8. I think you could potentially have a dangerous situation.  The pony lacks formal training, and having two young novice girls on his back may only make the situation worse.    He may not be lazy, but rather unknowledgeable.  I realize he is not your horse, but he should have a proper foundation before kids climb on his back.  With ponies you can accomplish that training through ground driving, long lining, and lunge line training.  My son has a pony, too small for an adult to get on, so we school her by ground driving her.  It works GREAT!

All you need is two lunge lines, a western saddle (or surcingle) and a bridle with a snaffle bit.  If you are using a western saddle feed the lines through the stirrups.  Practice lunging with the outside line behind the butt.  This takes practice... so be careful with your lines so you don't get all tied up.  After the pony is okay with the lunging and moving off of your verbal commands transition to the drivng. Start out slow, off to the side where the pony can see you and well out of kicking distance and work on steering, stopping, and speed.

Ponies are very smart and he will catch on quicker than you think.  I would not use spurs and I would not use the whip either.  If you are unable to work with the pony, then he is only suitable as a lead line pony at this time. Good Luck!
