What all will I need, and how much?

My boyfriend and I have been thinking about getting our own place, i.e. renting an apartment.

We plan on spending up to $700 a month on rent.

Paying the electric, water, and so on.

We might be having someone else help us by splitting the bills.

What all can you think of that we will need to move out on our own? How much money should we set aside before actually moving?

  1. depends on your credit, work history, etc.  most places now that the housing industry is a mess, are setting high standards for new renters, why, because they can.  normally first last and full security is what places will require if you have no work, rental, or credit history or bad history.  so look at the average rental rates in the area you want to live and triple it.  plus, set aside two hundred for credit checks if you plan on going to multiple places.  by the way, never sign a lease as part of a credit check, the can hold you to it.  good luck

  2. You will likely need 2 mos rent plus security deposit which can be as much or more than a month rent.  You will also need deposits for all utility companies which can be a few hundred dollars or more. If you have pets there will be more deposits and sometimes an added amt to rent. It can be quite expensive to move especially the first time the best way to know the exact amt is to call all utility companies and ask what the required deposit is  as well as hook up fees, ask what is required at the rental property and don't forget the application fees and any other hidden fees that might be required and then add a bit to those figures to be safe.  Good luck!
