  1. average airliner. 30000 through 40000

  2. Remember, its easier for airborne fire control radar to seek/destroy from below the targets especially with LOW frequency radar.  The enemy is acquired the fighters maneuver to below/behind for a radar guided missile shot because its easier to eliminate ground clutter than looking DOWN.

  3. From the surface to over 60,000 feet. It depends on the type of airplane and the nature of the mission, and there are lots of both, so you can't simply generalize by asking what altitude "most" war planes fly at.  Be more specific.

  4. 60K feet.

  5. Hi-Hi 60,000 Ft +

    Hi 35,000 - 40,000 Ft

    Lo-Hi 5,000 - 40,000 Ft

    Lo 5,000 - 8,000 Ft

    Lo-Lo 250 Ft AGL

  6. Depends on the mission. In stealth mission, usually the plane flies low to avoid radar detection.

  7. Depends on the mission, and these are gross generalizations for fixed wing aircraft:

Typically for an air/air mission (be it Defensive Counter Air -I'm intercepting someone coming at me or strike package escort/sweep -I'm going after someone) higher is better.  In these mission profiles depending on suppression of the Surface To Air threat, FL 300 -400 is a good guess.  Just as in WW1, a height advantage is potential energy I can convert to either engage or get out.

For air/mud, the current thinking is a medium altitude delivery, which is ABOUT 8000-10000 AGL.  This takes one out of the MANPADS and AAA threats, again this assumes that some effective SAM suppression has occurred.

Occasionally aircraft will go lower than this, for strafing primarily, but with standoff weapons, the medium alt is preferred.
