What am I going to do now ?

I'm 19 years old. I graduated from High School back in June. What now ?

My parents don't want me to get a job. They say it's too hard to get a job these days.

My father wants to learn how to drive. He makes sure I study ever night. He takes me down to the DMV almost ever week.

My father says he wants me to go to a college. My mother doesn't care if I go to college or not. She says she wants me to stay home for a year and just chill.

I'm not sure if I want to go to college. I really hated High School. They were the worst 4 years of my life. I hate doing homework and studying for tests. I'm sick of that stuff. I'm been going to school for over 12 years.

I keep telling my parents I want to go to work, but they keep telling me "work sucks". My family needs the extra money. I want to help out , but they won't let me get a job so I could help out.

I know I can't get a good job with just a High School diploma these days. I heard people get better jobs and get paid more if they go to college. True or false ?

I'm not sure what to do with my life. I'm not sure what I want to be. I'm turning 20 in March 2009.

  1. If they want you to go to college get a nice house and get a car. You need a job. Besides this is up to you what you want to do. It is clear you're not getting a chance to say what you want to do because nearly every sentence in your question begins with My father wants me to... or My mum wants me to...

This is up to you, it is your life. You need to tell them this.

  2. Glad to know that you are such a responsible child who wants to help your family. What your parents say is true. Though qualification may be just a piece of paper at the end of the day. However, your stepping stone into society depends on your qualification. With qualification, you stand a better chance, couple with your capability, you will be able to shine.

Your parents have their reason to insist that you continue your studies. If they are able to see you through your education, why not fulfil their wish. This is also part of filial piety.

I have a friend who only finished only secondary education. Her choice of job is very limited and usually not highly paid. Now that she understands the importance of qualification, she is taking up part-time studies. I have to attest that it is not smooth sailing. She has been repeating her papers cos she had difficulty juggling between studies and work.

You are only 19 years old, you have not been through the cruelty and harshness of the society. Once you miss this stage to continue your studies, I'm afraid you may live in regret.

    Do think carefully.

  3. oh wow your really in a pickle huh? well i would say to tell you dad to let you get a job to earn money for colleg and do just that... along the way though you should get your liscense it really helps... believe me

  4. if you want to make good money you need a college degree.

you can get job but its just not as good or as easy if you don't have a college degree.

also, you should get a job temporarily so that you can have some experience and if your parents don't like it they can't do anything because your over 18.

  5. Nice set of parents you have.
