I have trouble backing up really quick, especially when a ball is coming at me.I have the urge to catch it,and sometimes,I do.I'm not sure if you're allowed to set it,and I have tryouts soon, and I have no idea what to do if it happens! I know that if it goes past you you can bump it behind you,but when its coming directly at your face I have no idea.Any help?

  1. bend your knees and set it!

  2. watch others play.  Best way to learn technique

  3. Most likely, you will be able to set the ball. A set is a motion where you push the volleyball upward with your fingertips. If the ball is coming at your face, You can push it outward from your face using a set.

  4. if its coming wicked fast @ your face, then put ur hands there.

or set it, i dont know why you cant.

  5. you have three options when this happens.

    1.  Hand pass the ball as if you were going to set it but instead of ball to hand like a set, it is hand to ball.  what this means is you have to go get the ball, not let it come to you.

    2.  Just put your hands and arms in front of your face!  If the ball is coming very fast, simply throw your hands up, let the ball bounce off of your hands.

    3.  Shuffle back and forearm pass the ball.

What most people do not understand about this situation and volleyball is passing, digging, and serve receiving are not  offensive skills, they are defensive skills.  you are simply deflecting the ball to the setter.  Remember it doesn't have to be the perfect pass, just high enough for the setter to get under it.  Also a little hint that always helps me is, picture the perfect pass coming off your hands, arms, or face is it has too, once you picture it, it usually happens.  You will make many mistakes trying to learn this but it is all worth it.  by the way, you should probably expect to get hit in the face a few times along the way.  just stick to it and remember your playing defense not offense.

  6. I'd try bumping, that or spike it if I'm close to the net.

  7. We are two peas in the SAME pod. OMG. i was just asking the SAME question. I always catch it when it comes at my face, and its like, a reflex. Well, do what im trying to do. Step back and then bump it. That ll work, but you've got to work on stepping back quick enough, so that you can bump the ball.

  8. It is legal to set it, except u gotta keep ur hands firm.  If they are to floppy then the ball will go right through.  It's called a paddle by the way.

  9. Smile and let your lips take the impact.
