Question:

What am I supposed to do with my second grade class the last week of school? Teach? Review? Randomness?

Our last day of school is June 9th. I figure on the last day I'll have the kids help me break down my classroom and we'll have pizza or something.

But what about all next week? What am I supposed to do with our class? Most of our books are being collected this week.

Am I supposed to keep teaching normally? Show videos and have the kids do fun stuff during the day?

I'm a first year teacher, so excuse my ignorance.

  1. its second grade, just have the kids watch some videos or do some other random activities.  They should have fun

  2. Prepare for the future.

What will you do with what you have learned?

    Who do you admire?

At the years end (this was in grade 5) one of my teachers asked each class member to vocalize the positive points every other class member had ....as if the person "on stage" (so to speak) examined could bequeath these desirable traits to the next class.

Some kids mentioned that I was a good creative writer who had good stories to tell and from that moment on I knew I wanted to be a writer.

I had not seen this ability in myself.  Yet the other kids did.

It was fun and I think doing something like this would be great instructive and informative and the memory lasts through their whole life!

  3. Well, eventually you will find activities that both you and yr students enjoy that last week of school. I know that when I was still in elementary school, I loved the teachers that got all the cleaning out of the way so we could have fun the last few days of school. Even if they were slightly educational games that we played, it was still fun and exciting because the end of the year was just around the corner.

I sugguest doing the things that you know yr class enjoys and dont get to do very often.

One of the years, my teacher did an activity that involved charts and everyones name in the class and we individually wrote something nice about the person under their names and on the last day of school, my teacher gave us our own papers that had all the things that people said about us on it. I still have the paper to this day. Little quirky things like that.

  4. We have themed days the last week of school because all of our things are either already packed or in the process of.

We have movie, popcorn and pj day.  The kiddos wear their pajamas, bring blankets and pillows and we veg out all day watching their favorite movies they've brought to share.

We have field day one day.  We spend the entire day outside.  We have class competitions (tug-o-war, crab races, limbo, etc.).  We have popsicles and a picnic lunch.

Water day is the kiddos' favorite!  They get to bring water guns, water balloons, etc.  We have a "water war".

Just try to think of fun activities to keep them busy!

  5. They wont be very focused in the last week of school, why not organise an obsticle course for them to do and get them outside and active. If your gonna teach, let them learn through playing like this. Anything you can think of keep them occupied, but try to avoid movies and tv, dont do things which they would ordinarily do over summer vacation... Good Luck and have a good summer break.

  6. Have students make memory books. They could make ABC memory books or there are some memory book templates online if you search for them.  http://www.vickiblackwell.com/endofyear....

You could also do reader's theater scripts, one of my kids favorite activities.  There are also some reader's theater scripts online. They can perform the scripts for another classroom or principal or librarian, etc...  http://teachingheart.net/readerstheater....

Your kids can also write letters with advice for next year's 2nd graders. You can bind them in a book and read them to your new 2nd graders next year.
