By one method the person is your third cousin.  However, there is another method of calculating this which says it is your second cousin once removed.  Many people think it is one or the other but it can be calculated as either if you understand out the different methods of calculating genealogy.

The more common one says cousin second cousin once removed, however an older one may just say 3rd cousin.

Picture an A shaped ladder, with a person sitting on the top of the ladder.  

When that person has children, they are siblings, and one step down from the top.  Siblings share parents.

The next step down is his/her grandchildren.  The grandchildren are 1st cousins (they share a grandparent, AND are the same level down).  

2nd cousins share great grandparents.  These are the next step down from the common ancestor, and are on the same level.

3rd cousins are the next level, and share gr gr grandparents.

REMOVED comes in, when persons are cousins, BUT they are not the same generation.  IE  MY grandfather is your great grandfather.. we are not the same generation.. we are a generation removed.  

Your parent is my cousin.. you are my 1st cousin, once (one generation) removed.

Your mother and her cousin are 1st cousins.  Your mother's children and HER cousins children are the same level, 2nd cousins.

If the child's parent is your mother's FIRST cousin, you and the child are SECOND cousins.

If the child's parent is your mother's SECOND cousin, you and the child are THIRD cousins.

There is a pattern here.

If the child's parent is your mother's NINTH cousin, you and the child are TENTH cousins.

Just add one to the degree. (Degree = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)

Unless your ninth cousin is George Bush or George Clooney, most people don't care about cousins any farther out than second. I know a man whose 7th cousin is Tom Cruise. He brags about it.
