What am i disqualified for in the navy with no depth perception?

I am about to go to MEPS in a couple weeks for the navy. I got a 93 on my AVABS, no criminal problems. Healthy as a h**e other than I failed the depth perception test. I know I have it, I have no problems driving, and I can tell what i in front of the other, as well as how far away omething is. The nurses at MEPS were holding pens up at 15 feet away asking which was closer, but for some reason none of the circles on their test popped out.

This being said. I had a few jobs in mind. My first choice was the nuclear program. So far I qualify for that (unsure on the depth perception at this point). Also the regular ET (non Nuclear) if i do not qualify for nuclear. The other was Intelligence. Does anyone know if any of these are attainable without depth perception? I also really want to do submarine duty, can I qualify for that?

If not, advice on a good job would be great. I would like something not entirely phyically demanding. I am better at mental stuff, but i can do some physical, I jut dont want to do only physical. I would like something out to sea most of the time. Something exciting, but I would like to have some liberty on weekends and possibly weekdays. (I dont really want something that will be 12 hour days 7 days a week) Also does anyone know any jobs that have better advancement rates than others or ones that have advanced enlistment rank?

Lots of questions I know, but I just want to make a good career decision before I sign the next 3-6 years of my life away. (most likely 6) Any help would be great. Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. since you got such a high score you could pretty much do anything you want. i suggest doing something YOU like to do regardless of what the recruiter tells you. they will try to get you to go nuc because it looks better on them but keep in mind that this is something you will have to be doing for the rest of your enlistment not them.   they bonus money for them is great, yes but you''ll most likely get put on a sub with all men, keep that in mind also...

get the list of all the rates and do some soul searching on what your really interested in because believe me doin what you want to do and something you like to do makes all the difference when you start facing the bullshit of deployments and long days at work

  2. A job that would put you on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier would be out of the question. One of the tests for the annual flight deck physical is depth perception as a matter of fact. Most jobs will not be a problem though. Good luck.

  3. I'm biased.  Take on a medical specialty and later translate that to something in the professional arena ie. psychologist, physician assistant, nurse, med doctor.

Not too physically demanding but mentally challenging like no other.

Depth Perception will 100% rule out anything that asks you to operate complex machinery.  So you won't be flying lol :)

Following up to your additional info:

If you feel the information is off, ask for the station commander (the person in charge of the station).   You can always ask for things in writing.  They really have no reason to lie--that's just puts an unhappy applicant on the MEP floor that will just walk away when they hear they can't get what they want.  Since the swear-in takes place AFTER the job, it makes no sense for recruiters to mislead you before hand.

I was a recruiter, I know the system and it seriously is not anyone's best interest to work this way.

That said, you have options, provided you already qualified to enlist and you're just waiting for a job.  But as stated, you'll have to minus all the jobs that require operating machinery (including aircraft, ship, cars, trucks, SUBS, and a variety of highly mechanical equipment) from your already long list of options.  Pick a support role to whatever interests you the most if they can't accomodate any of your first requests.

  4. I failed the depth perception too, and like you I know I'm fine, I think the test is just screwy...

but anyway, I've signed my contract and all for Nuke...I leave in Feb....so I didn't have any problems with it...

  5. Talk to a recruiter or get in contact with someone that is highly ranked and see what they have to say.

  6. It will be hard to get a job w/o depth perception in the navy but i would recommend listening to what your recruiter tells you. If you genuinely believe the recruiter is lying to you, (btw most recruiters don't lie) then go to another district and ask their recruiters. they can tell you whether or not your recruiter is lying.
