I'm planning to go to Paris and I am making out the amount of money I need to save up. I will be staying with an older cousin, but I am not sure if I will be paying for meals or if she will be paying for them. Just incase, what amount can I be expected to pay for food, and what could I expect to pay for everything else?

  1. Paris is expensive - but well worth it. Better shopping, food and culture than the UK.  I would say save about £300 per week to get by comfortably!! Have fun!

  2. I brought 350 Euros and it was enough for everything for a week.

  3. I go to Paris as often as possible because I simply love the place.  You don't have accommodation costs to worry about, but as far as food is concerned, I go out a little wider from the centre each time I visit, so now I eat in small cafes and restaurants which are not in the least bit fashionable, but the food is cheap, and the language around you is ripe!  They can be drab and ordinary (to us) but they are far more Parisien than the city places.  Paris is probably like everywhere - if you eat in the centre, the prices are outrageous.  As for the amount in euros, look at the other answers.  I travel cheaply, and I eat cheaply, because I am always on a tight budget.  I walk everywhere, I hardly use the metro. But Paris is the one place where I would love to settle ...

  4. It all depends on what you plan on doing. I was in Paris last year in April 2007. Here is the approx. amount of money I spent:

    Petit déjeuner: 15-20 Euros

    Déjeuner: 18-25 Euros

    Dîner: 20-30 Euros

Remind you I was a tourist so I didnt know where all the cheap eats were I was merely looking for a place to eat. Also, make sure you eat breakfast early. I was there for 2 weeks and woke up late a few times around 930-1000AM and alot of restaurants close down during this time to prepare for lunch. So, I was stuck eating bread until lunch time.

I found shopping there to be fairly cheap compared to California. I bought a nice pair of loafers and a fedora for like $30 US dollars.

If you are going to use public transportation get a RER weekly pass. It was like $22 US dollars and it goes all over Paris and it good for a week! Paris has the best public transportation system I have ever experienced!

In all during my 12 days there I spent in Paris, I may have spent about $1200 US dollars that includes hotel stay as well.

  5. About 100 euro a day, excluding things You can't eat or drink.

  6. Well you will probably be having breakfast at home. I would suggest offering to pay when you go grocery shopping together some day.

Lunch in the city can be 7 to 10 euros from a street vendor or 12-15 euros for a 3-course meal in a lot of small restaurants outside the main tourist attractions. You can also buy from the grocery store and make sandwiches in the morning for your lunch. Dinner is around 15-25 euros for a 3-course meal. remember that service is aready included in the price and that tipping is not necessary (just leave small change).

Admissions to sites are 5 to 10 euros on average. A lot of things are free. You may want to buy some souvenirs and sit at an overpriced café to do some people watching too and treat your cousin to a nice restaurant some day.

Transportation will cost you 15 to 30 euros a week depending on how much you will be using the métro or if you go outside Paris or not.

So you can spend as little as 45 euros a day and of course as much as you can afford to... Have a great trip!

  7. Where abouts in Paris?  It's a big old place, fella!

I've just come back from Montreuil, Paris and it was lovely there.  Very hot as well.  For the day I must have spent about 10-20 euros excluding travel/accomodation.  There are some great fresh open markets and supermarkets too in Montreuil.  Make sure you check out many of the festivals if there are any on.

If you are going to muse around the 'usual tourist' areas, then you are of course going to get stung.  Like any tourist region, you are going to end up paying 2-5 times more than other regions.  Try and be adventurous if you're going as a tourist, get on the metro and travel around a bit.  Much more fun and exciting than seeing the 'usual hot-spots'.

  8. A very rough figure of 1400 euro for a week, excluding air fare but including hotel, is a good starting point.
