What and how often does one need to check on private well water?

For sanitary reasons?  In densely populated areas 4 times a year.

In the countryside where nothing changes, when you move in the place and maybe every three or four years.

Our  county recommends well testing twice a year  . I don't know if that is necessary but once a year is wise .i left a web link to a booklet that our county sent to all of us residents . Lots of basic information .Maybe your county has something similar .

I don't think there's any particular time span recommended for checking your well's water supply.   We've lived here in rural SW Mi for over 50 years and if it weren't for our township wanting to put in a water line, ours wouldn't have been checked even now.  I imagine nursing homes and schools, that sort of thing, have to be checked on a regular basis, but other than that it's pretty much up to you.  If it tastes ok, then it's probably alright.
