  1. vatican museum tour costs 12 euros

you can spend the entire day there in the museum, the grounds, the "basement" tombe dei papi (go in and it's kind of hidden to the left of the main altar & amazing)the square & surrounding area. just down the street is the castle san angelo which was used by the popes as a sub vatican in the 13 or 1400's. there is an underground tunnel to the vatican too tha is no longer in use but....

try this website for a great map and information -- www.polarisonline.it

i would highly recommend researching what is there and checking out what you really want to see.

fodors has a walking tour in their rome book - in the footsteps of the ancient romans starting around the colosseo.

here ar e a couple other tourist office websites

    www.romaturismo.it

    www.enjoyrome.com

    www.romeguide.it

it took me a while to map out our stay but we got in just about everything we wanted to see.  we never made it to the spanish steps but for us that was no big deal once we found out what they were.  we did make it up the janniculum hill where it is said st peter was crucified to a lovely church, a state war memorial and an amazing view of the city - coming up through neighborhoods and such - it was something.

thie churches are free to enter but if you are a photo buff you will want to hang onto your 1 and .50 euro coins to operate the special lighting.

when you're int he vatican area - stop along the borgo pio - if you're standing with your back to st peters it the street just to your left and runs parallel to the villa de coro.... (the street that elads to the vatican) great eateries, bakeries and little shops.

almost forgot.... back to the vatican -- standing with your back to the square - to your right are sime side streets - walk down past the square and there will be more true straight off side streets - turn right and you'll run into the street  - borgo s. spirito - there is a churchsanto spirito - it's small and up some stairs -- once inside you'll see a rather baren view ahead of you - but look up.... this church, once also used as a hospital, has an amazing ceiling - painted by none other than Michelangelo!  most people 1) don't know it's there and 2) have no clue about the ceiling!

  2. well, I don't know the prices and stuff, but I've been there and we went to all the major Cathedrals, and the Catacombs, and The Vatican Museum, the Trevi Fountain, and St. Peters square.  I was only there for 2 days, and believe me, theres too much to cover in 2 days, it was all a blurr in the end.  I want to go back and never leave, lol, have fun.  Oh, I almost forgot, the Coliseum, that was kinda cool, but don't let people take your picture, they'll use your camera, and then charge you $5 for it!  Oh, and watch for pick-pockets, they're every where!

  3. I would do a Classical Rome tour and an 'Ancient Rome Tour.'

You can book this with a lot of differnt web sites. And no matter which one you use, you will be using the same tour company in Rome. If you are leary about booking online. I'd suggest booking directly with your hotel in Rome. You can email the hotel manager or concierge and they would be happy to book this. This will not cost you extra, it's the same. And this way, you are guaranteed to be booked by the hotel. They will set up pick-up times, etc. Enjoy!!
