  1. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, U.S.A.

Gigantic volcanic eruption, back in 1912 changed the entire region. For several days prior to the eruption there had been numerous earthquakes. Finally the Novarupta volcano erupted sending tons of hot pumice, ash, gas, steam etc. into the air. This eruption continued, according to the history for several days. Not only was the volcano erupting but numerous fissures had opened up and they were sending the steam, gas etc into the air as well. By the time it was done, over 65 square kilometers (40 square miles) was covered in volcanic debris up to 200 m (700 ft) deep.

fumaroles - according to the geology glossary furnaroles are vent for volcanic steam and gases.

The National Geographic Society sent Robert Griggs to investigate the area 4 years later and he said, "The whole valley as far as the eye could reach was full of hundreds, no thousands -- literally, tens of thousands -- of smokes curling up from its fissured floor,"
