  1. I lived in Hanoi for two months, but not during the summer (yet). There is nothing big that is officially happening during the summer there. The only significant holiday during the summer is Rằm Tháng Bảy, which celebrates the full moon in the seventh month or July (Why they celebrate this is baffling to me). It's a city with a population of over 6,000,000 people, and the epicenter of Vietnam's culture. That in mind, I'm sure there is something worthwhile going on.

Hanoi is a fantastic place, and I learned to love it the longer I stayed there. The Hoan Kiem District is where you want to be, because that is the epicenter of the city. Every Friday and Saturday night is the night market, which goes up a street North of Hoan Kiem Lake to Doan Xuan market. Every morning starting before the crack of dawn, just about everyone in Hanoi takes their exercise walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. Everyone takes their lunch and shift sleep from noon till about 2:00 PM. Most all of the museums are in or near Hoan Kiem District. The rest are usually a short taxi ride away. You need to go to the Old Quarter, sit at a Bia Hoi (gas or draft beer) and watch the people while sipping on a glass of Hanoi Bia. Stop by Ming's if you're there at night, and enjoy Vietnam's best Jazz bar (yes.. Jazz).

If you get bored with Hanoi, you can take a bus to Haiphong and then take a tour boat through Ha Long Bay. Words cannot accurately describe the beauty of the place. If you don't want to take a bus, then take a river boat tour up the Red River. You will make a stop at Bat Tran (???) the ceramic village, where anything ceramic you ever imagine is made and sold there.

If you're still bored, go to the amusement park in the West Lake District. You can't miss it, because there's a huge ferris wheel there that can be seen for kilometers. If all this still bores you, then try walking across a busy street in any part of Hanoi. It will amaze you in finding out they their seemingly chaotic driving is actually controlled chaos.

If all else fails, go to Noi Bai Airport and fly to Saigon.

  2. I agree with MojaveDan.  HaNoi is a beautiful city and so much to see and do.  It is very safe, great food, friendly people and great bia hoi.  I try to visit there every year.  Good luck.

  3. tet trung thu
