What anyone sponsored a child through Plan or SOS Children's Villages?

I'm looking for a non-religious charitable organization where I could sponsor a child from. I've narrowed it down to two organizations.

Can anyone tell me about their sponsorship experiences?

There is a Christian organization here in Monrovia California called World Vision.  While my husband was enrolled in Seminary we sponsored a child with this organization.  We would get little packets in the mail from them, with a picture of how they were growing and what clothing and supplies they had received from our donations.
