Question:

What aquatic plants can i get from the pet store to feed my snapping turtles?

also what vegetables work well? ive heard lettuce and carrots but i dont know anything else i can use. any suggestions would be great. thanks

  1. Feed him meat. Snapping turtles don't eat plants unless they are young. Sometimes they will eat them when they are really young. Put fish in the water with him so he can eat whenever he wants.


  2. Mine has been known to take bites out of a cactus (Epiphyllum) that hung low over his tank. Generally, I would go with the dark green leafy vegetables and sweet potato as food. Avoid head lettuce and limit the use of spinach.

    Aquatic plants from the pet store won't live long, whether eaten or not. If you can collect plants from a pond or stream, you might give them a try but it's easier to use vegetables.

    BTW, the snappers, like other turtles, are most carnivorous when young. It is when they become adult that they consume half (or more) plant material. Maybe you could throw it a squid (just kidding, squid).
