What architectural feature am I describing? I forget the name.?

I remember from a long time ago on a trip that there is an architectural feature that is on top of houses and buildings from hundreds of years ago. I am thinking it is called a cupola, but I am not certain. It's function is to act as air conditioning...where air comes in the tower and goes throughout the rest of the house.
