Any type of timber can be live sawn, and any type of timber can be sawn around. Generally, live sawing is better suited to relatively small trees. Really big logs need to be broken down into smaller sections and hence need to be "sawn around". Also timbers that check and split during kiln drying may need to be quarter sawn (a type of sawing around) to minimize this problem.
