  1. AM waves are subject to interference by household appliances and especially lightning.  AM waves can only reproduce sounds with a much lower range than FM.  FM has a wider range. AM Waves can interfere with each other and can end up much farther away from being reflected off the ionosphere.  There is room for only 117 AM stations in a geographical area win the AM Band and 200 with FM.
