  1. I live 13 miles west of Toronto.

I'll give the temperatures in °F

In the summer months we get temperatures in the 80's and 90's. With the humidity it does get over a 100 quite often. I don't really need to adapt and modify my behavour at all. I guess what affects Toronto area people will be the smog. On the hot humid days people with asthma etc are advised to stay indoors.

Spring and fall seasons have temps from the 60's down to the 40's. so I guess I adapt by putting on a sweatshirt or jacket but that's about it.

    Winter:

Winter months would be the time that most Canadians would need to adapt and modify their behaviours the most. Temps tend to be anywhere between -3 and 40. Most time it is in the 30s.

Sure we get some snow and ice so one has to take more care when out walking if there is a snowfall or icy spots. One good fall and older people will break a hip. Older people who enjoy walking will often go to malls to do their walking.

Shoveling the snow from your driveway, depending on the amount of snow is quite a work out so middle aged and older have to be careful that they don't over do it while they shovel as heart attacks tend to increase that time of the year. Also, the bending and twisting causes more back problems. You just have to take your time but like most people you want to hurry and get it done and that is when the injuries occur.

Driving is another area that we have to change from the other months. Roads get black ice, snow covered etc but the same number of drivers are out there. You have to remember to slow down, stay further back and be aware that it will take you a much longer distance to stop you car. When you accelerate  you have to do it slowly. If you just give the car gas, you'll fish tale and slide all over. Many more fender-benders in the winter.

Many people will carry a small shovel, kitty litter or sand etc in their trunk so that if they get stuck in the snow they can clean the snow from the wheels, spread some kitty litter for traction and get going again (chains on tires are illegal). Some people will carry a blanket in the car to help keep warm if the car happens to break down.

I dress in layers in the winter months. I tend to be outside quite a bit so I'll wear cotton long-sleeved t-shirt, a heavier one over top, then a sweat-shirt, a down vest and finally my winter jacket. Usually 2 pairs of socks in well-insulated boots, a pair of jeans (really cold days - long underwear), hat and gloves. If I get too warm I can peal off some clothing.

As one poster has already mentioned we do have the Rogers dome (use to be Sky dome) where the Blue Jays play. It is needed as in April when baseball starts we could still get a couple of snow storms. But by the time May rolls around the snow is gone. It does make it easier though as we never get rain delays.

  2. 1.  They have built indoor facilities to accommodate sporting events, the arts,  and shopping malls during the winter months.

    2.  They have learned which clothing keeps them the warmest and driest during the winter, and coolest in the summer.

    3.  They build their houses on the northwest side of Lake Ontario.

    4.  They learned how to commute effectively in sometimes harsh winter conditions.
