Avila , Caceres , Cordoba , Cuenca , Salamanca , Santiago de Compostela, Segovia and Toledo have been adjudged to be placed among the league of cities that are considered to possess historical and cultural importance and does not belong to one single nation, but should be open to entire humanity.

  2. 1. Covadonga, Asturias - Where Pelayo defeated the Moors and the reconquest started.

    2. Monasterio San Millan de la Cogolla. La Rioja. Two ancient monasteries. The first written evidence of the Castillian language is found there.

    3. The Alcazar in  Toledo -- famous battle siege site of the Civil War. The Republicans were fighting to gain control of Conservative, Catholic Toledo.  The Alcazar withstood 70 days of heavy bombardment.   Colonel commanded the Nationalists was informed by telephone that Republican forces had kidnapped his 16 year old son, Luis and unless he surrended immediately, he executed.

    To prove that they had his son, he was put to the phone to speak to his father. 'Surrender or they will shoot me' he said. His father replied 'then commend your soul to God, shout 'Viva Espana' and die like a hero.' The Republicans then shot Luis in the head. The fortress held out until it was relieved by Franco's forces in September 1936.

    In the Alcazar today, the telephone still remains on display.

    4. Zaragosa, Aragon - Site of the miracle of Santa Pilar, patron Saint of Spain and also the site of ancient CaesarAugusta, Roman city whose ruins can be viewed under the main plaza.

    5. Estrella, Navarra -- major stopping point on the Camino de Santiago, known as "La Bella" for it's beautry. Founded in 1090 AD by King Sancho I and settled by freemen. Many fine medieval buildings. Also, a miracle site...

  4. 1.  alhambra palace (granada)---incredible 24 acre fortress, the last moorish stronghold, great for seeing islamic architecture/gardens/etc

    2.  sevilla---somewhat touristy now, still great to visit.  the plaza espana pays tribute to spain's 17 different regions, also impressive is the real alcazar palace, 3rd largest city in spain

    3.  pamplona---running of the bulls, otherwise a rather small town

    4.  guernica---in the northern (basque) region, subject of a picasso painting, try the museum in bilbao

    5.  madrid---capital, visit the plaza royal
