Hi, I live in Romania, in the city of Satu Mare (North West of the country). Today, about 7 helicopters flew above where I live towards Ukraine. The helicopters had the American flag on them, they were attack helicopters, they were flying very low (maybe 30 meters from the ground).

I do not know what many of you think about this region but seeing those helicopters is a VERY unusual sight.

We all know about the new tensions in Ukraine (pro-Russians against pro-West), what do you think?

  1. The USA does training exercises with many nations, and the Ukraine may very well be one of them.  If that were the case, Russia was most likely told of this weeks ago.

If that's not the case, it's anybody's guess what exactly is going on.

US-Ukraine military drills get under way in Black Sea

KIEV, Ukraine – US-Ukrainian military exercises began on the Black Sea on Monday amid anti-NATO protests that demonstrated the deep hostility among some in this former Soviet republic toward the Western military bloc.

The two-week Sea Breeze exercises also involve 15 other countries, including NATO members. The purpose is to practice for multinational peacekeeping operations. Ukrainian leaders who favor joining NATO also hope the drills will help bring their country closer NATO and Western military standards.

The exercises will involve warships, planes, helicopters, armored vehicles and various kinds of troops.

Anti-NATO protesters have set up camps in the area along the Black Sea coast and are planning rallies.

Potential NATO membership is a highly divisive issue in Ukraine, a France-sized nation of 46 million that lies between Russia and NATO member nations in Europe.

Pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko and other leaders asked NATO in January to grant the nation a roadmap to joining the alliance, leading to weeks of protests in parliament and noisy rallies on the streets. NATO declined to grant the request but assured the nation it would eventually open its doors. – AP

  3. The US military does not publish all its movements on the Internet or other media for the public's approval.

The helicopters were NOT joining NATO  exercise Sea Breeze 2008 as it began 16 July 2008 and ended 26 July 2008 with the 16 nations and 2000 military personnel heading home at that time. The Saudi Gazette appears to be just a bit late in its up-to-date reporting.
