What goes on in class? Is it fun? boring? Interesting?

  1. It requires clear and effective writing as well as a portfolio. It also requires for the student to have a desire to learn about English. How interesting it is, depends on the student.


  2. They may be fun, boring or interesting depending on your own interests and attention span, and on the effectiveness of the teacher.

    As an English major I took literature classes (we read books, discussed them, wrote papers), theory classes (we learned about literary criticism and applied it to texts we read, often analyzed small passages to death), creative writing classes (we wrote stories, read each others stories, wrote papers about stories) and professional classes (editing, writing for certain audiences, the publishing industry, etc.).

    If you're a good reader and a decent writer and you have the patience for some abstract theories, it's a great major.  If you don't like to analyze what you read, it's probably best to look another direction.
