What are Florida and New Yorks State Minerals?

  1. New York does not have a state mineral, but it has a state gemstone, Garnet. This is appropriate as the worlds biggest garnet crystals ever discovered were found at the Barton Mine on Gore Mountain, New York. The biggest were about 3 foot across, most were turned into sand paper. The Barton Mine is now a museum and you can visit it, you can still see garnets up to 1 foot across there.

    Florida has a state stone and gem, agatized coral and moonstone. Moonstone is a variety of feldspar with a nice bluish shimmering opalescence. It was chosen in 1970 to commemorate the Apollo moon landings.
