i had a french exchange student

she laughed at me evertime we called them french fries, and laughed 8x as hard when we called them freedom fries.

they call them fries. frites.

"Pommes frites", or "fried potatoes".  And, in Europe, usually served with a variant of mayonnaise.

For reference:  Chips is the English term for "fries".  American "Potato chips" are called "crisps" in England.
