What are GLI models?

So I have seen a lot of various models, such as the TDI, GL, GLS, GLX, 1.8T, 2.5...and so on

but what are GLI models? i know GTI are sportier versions of the golf and jetta, but what exactly is the GLI?

Actually, the GTI is the sport version of the Golf/Rabbit and the GLI is the sport version of the Jetta.  They both share the same engine and transmissions.  The GTI has always been Volkswagen's iconic "hot hatch" and the nameplate isn't suitable for a sedan, so the Jetta received the GLI badge instead.
