  1. specialized, trek, and gary fisher

  2. If you have access to local bike shops, that is the first place to go see for yourself. Nothing compares to a real test ride for seeing what you like, and the local bicycle dealers tend to take care of your bike a lot more than another vehicle dealers will of motorcycles, boats or cars.

If you are forced to buy a bike purely from internet research, then you might have a hard time of it. Major brands like Giant and Fuji are very likely to have something decently priced that you like, but there are so many quality bikes on the market now. Don't sweat what brand it is too much - research individual bikes that catch your interest. Make sure it fits your body and your riding, which is hard to do via mail-order!

Bikes Direct has an impressive spec-to-price ratio for new bikes, but it is just mail order bikes with some assembly required.

If you consider yourself a newbie cyclist, don't blow too much money on a shiny new bike. Craigslist is a good place to look, and ebay has some deals.

Around here $300 will get you low, low-end new stuff or something decent used. I think an older bike is more interesting anyway, just don't get anything with oddball parts - like 30-year old French and British bikes.

Around $600 new is getting pretty nice for a novice bike.

My advice would be to go for a used, but well-running Japanese bike from the 80's or newer. Just a couple hundred dollars and you could be rolling on some quality steel.

  3. Stick with a local bike shop.  You need to figure out what you want to do with the bike.  If you are just riding around town and want quality and comfort, you can spend between $300 and $400.  If you want to ride truly off road or on road try to spend at least $500.  Plan to budget the needed accessories such as a helmet, lock, and some basic tools.  Try to buy locally and stay away from the internet.  You need someone to check the bike over and due a tune up in about 30 to 45 days.  It doesn't matter where you buy or what you buy, it will ne a tune up in a month or so.
