What are Good Coxswain (coxin) Calls during a rowing Race?

I have recently started to Cox for my universitys A10 novince rowing team. I have never doing any kind of rowing or coxing in my life, i'm 2 weeks into it and I have gotten decent at stearing and conducting pratices.

We have a race agenist another school on saturday, anyone have any good phrases I can yell to motivate my boys?

(Currently all I know are Power 10's and just being like "good job boys keep it up")

Also if during pratice if you have any funny sexual coxwain calls such as, "Give it to me Harder! Much Harder, or Really drive it in!" Could you give them to me cause I like give my boys something to laugh about during are 3 hour pratices in the cold...

  1. Learning how to steer is a great start! Now to keep progressing you need to work on your calls. I’ve now been rowing for 5 years and I’ve had terrible and wonderful coxswains and it makes a huge difference in my perspective of the workout. Anyway try checking out the multitude of coxswain websites...some of them have audio from races, which will give you a good idea of what good coxing sounds like. Add in some new calls at practice and see what your rowers react to and what they just ignore. Also there aren’t standard and true calls that work for everything so take into account the workout. Finally if you’re serious about rowing and your rowers are serious as well then a random sexual comment will only serve to distract them.

  2. power tens are good.  if its a 2k, do one on 500, one on 1000, one on 1500, and one on 1750.  we rowers can always give more than we think, and if we feel like everyone else in the boat is giving a little extra, we won't want to be the weekest link ;)

also when the boat's within 100 meters of finishing, shout to the boat that they have ten strokes left.  its more like twelve, but nobodys gonna stop until you pass that line.  good luck!

  3. Row faster you fat lazy b...........s

  4. if the rowers aren't together, calling catches might help.

-my favorite is "step" at the catch and "swing" at the finish.

-you can also just say "catch... finish"

-or my team really likes "POP" at the catch and "chaaa" during the recovery

    other random things to say:

    -"jump on that catch"

    -"power in the drive"

-"keep your chins up and eyes straight ahead" if you notice people drifting

-not only power tens but tens for focus, or glide, or breathing, or for different pairs in the boat.

honestly though, i don't even notice what my coxin says during races, but she keeps talking and that helps me focus. so just pretty much anything that comes out of your mouth is probably good.
