A coat of arms. A shield with symbolic figures representing the owner, awarded by heralds. The shield is usualy toped by a helmet with drapery of the colors of the shield, with a crest based on the figure on the shield. For instance: Sabel a lion rampant or. That is, a black shield with  gold lion standing on its' hind legs and clawing. The helmet would have black and gold drapery, and might have a gold lion's paw for a crest. I hope this helps.
