  1. It depends on which part of India you are going.

    If you goes to South (Tamil Nadu / Madras / Chennai), then they will have a big celebration during January 13,14 (Pongal) and April 13,14 (Tamil New Year). Also diwali is widely celebrated throghout the nation.

I've been to India four times and witnessed two major holidays: Holi - the festival of colors, where you might get sprayed with colored water or colored powders! and also Diwali, a kind of a new year celebration where candles are lit front of every house, bonfires are light and in the cities there are fireworks!
