  1. I think email or call you dance studio and check with Your Teacher becasue some techers often have a preference for a particular shoe. Some teachers prefer their students to dance in bare or socked feet, while others require a particular jazz shoe. Some teachers allow gymnastic shoes or soft ballet slippers.

Jazz shoes are available in leather or canvas, depending on which is more comfortable for you. Keep in mind that the prices for leather and canvas shoes may vary a great deal, with leather being more expensive. You may want to consider leather, however, if you want to get the most life out of your shoes, as they will usually hold up longer than canvas.

There are a variety of jazz shoes: the jazz shoe, the jazz sandal, the jazz sandal-shoe, the jazz sneaker, or the dancer trainer shoe. Wearing the right jazz shoes is very important. Make sure they have good arch support and lots of spring. Be certain that you are able to flex your feet in the shoes. Some jazz shoes have split-soles, meaning the shoe is capable of bending, allowing for more flexibility. Finally, make sure you can turn easily in the shoes.

Make sure your jazz shoes fit properly to avoid foot problems. Try on several sizes to make sure the fit is neither to loose nor too tight. Take your time to really make a good choice. Also, check the store's return policy in case you need to return them.

The following three companies make both jazz shoes and jazz sneakers:

    Award

    Bloch

    Capezio*

*most often you will find this brand it stores. It is very Sturdy

  2. They are little black shoes, generally made of leather.  They are soft and pliable with soles that have less traction then normal shoes so that you can slide your feet more easily.  They have thin black laces, and you can point your foot in them.  Unlike ballet shoes, they cover the foot completely and are more sleek looking.

Prices vary, but I remember getting mine for about 40- 50 bucks.

  3. I bought mine for my beginning dance class last year at a discount dance store for about $16, but you can also buy them as a Payless Shoes store. They come in different styles, but the most popular are black (or nude) with some elastic over the foot. Sometimes they come in lace-up. They are made of this fake-leather stuff that fits like a sock after you wear them a few times and I thought they were very comfortable. Hope this helps :)

  4. Jazz shoes should fit similar to ballet shoes. The fit does not have to be as exact or as snug as a pointe shoe, but buying them with too much "growing room" can be a mistake, too. The low jazz shoes and the jazz boots are easier to fit than the dance sneakers, in part because they lack a hard toe box
