I can't remember the correct spelling! They're insects here in the South that come out every 13 yrs.

They are super large grasshopper's....they are about 2 1/2" long........I've seem them quite a few times.....The ones I've seen are black and yellow.......and They eat everything in site......Now that the globing warming is changing the world....there will be more .........If you see one...you'll remember them !!

The insects that come out every 13 years are cicadas.  They make a shrill sort of buzzing sound with their wings.  There's also a seven-year variety.  Every so often, the 13-year bugs emerge in the same year as the 7-year, and then you have big brown bugs EVERYWHERE, and things are NEVER quiet.

    Katydids are more like large grasshoppers  They have a deeper, croaking sort of call that does sound like they're saying, "Katy did...she did she did...Katy did..."  I learned what they were when they made a mess out of my garden one year.
