  1. LRRP is also referred to as Deep Reconnaissance.  There is Close, Distant, and Deep Reconnaissance.

Close Recon starts at the Forward Edge of Battle Area (FEBA) to the Fire Support Coordination Line (FSCL).  The FSCL is an imaginary line on which artillery, naval gun fire, and similar are in range of commencing for support of the Infantry, the forward edge of the Infantry is called the Forward Line of Own Troops (FLOT).  This can be anywhere within the battlefield.

Distant Recon continues from the FSCL until the outer limit of the Commander's Area of Influence, which he has influence of the battlefield.  Distant Recon is in the concern of the locaion, disposition, composition and the movement of enemy forces.

Deep Recon (LRRP) is beyond the FSCL.  This is the Commander's Area of Interest.  This is far behind enemy lines, in their back yard!  This is in the interest of the Commander as far as in shaping the battlefield  He will need intelligence of any enemy activity that is beyond the reaches of any supportive arms.  You cannot mobilize troops this far since it is a potential hazard to do so, it requires a small, team trained in stealth, to report back every thing about the terrain, obstacles, enemy, etc.  Aerial photography only projects a 2D dimensional aspect of the battlefield, you must have ground reconnaissance to conduct any theater.

NOTE:  Search and Destroy (S&D) is not reconnaissance, that is called Direct Action (DA) operations, or what they called back in Vietnam, 'Stingray' Operations.  Specialized Recon teams have been faced where a recon mission can suddenly turn into a DA!

Check out my wiki article on my user page.  It is about Force Recon, but that is what they do...long range reconnaissance.  You'll get the idea on what they do...

  2. llrps identified units specifically tasked with extended search and destroy missions during the late 1960's thru early 70's mostly in the viet nam and laos. i believe these were performed by special operations groups to include beret, seals and rangers. your best bet for specifics would be a web search as not many of these guys are still around to answer you. another related search item that might help would be "mac-v-sog."
