They're sound files.  They're not just old ringtones, but they were used in old PC games as well.  Matter of fact, people started making MIDI files that sounded just like popular music.  There's entire databases full of midi files.

MIDI is to MP3 as is 8-bit Nintendo is to Wii.

midi files are really old ring tones.  most of the time the based of some really old theme song or something like like.  as for what you do with them, you set them as your ring tone if you have a compatible or just really old phone.

not sure you'll get this but remeber the ring tones that came with those old nokia's with that snake game on them, those are midi's
