  1. People who are at times smarter than Doctors.

  2. Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses.  They have a master's degree in nursing and are able to treat and manage a variety of medical conditions in patients along a spectrum of ages.  They can specialize (like in women's health or cardiology) or generalize (family practice).

They are also able to prescribe medications.

They are considered a mid-level provider - in the same class as a physician's assistant (high level provider would be a doctor).

Just as a FYI -- it isn't a couple extra classes -- it is a minimum of two full years of studies with rotations in different specialities (peds, family, adult, women's health) and intensive classes on medical management including pharmacology.

  3. Medical Hierarchy:

  5. nurses who are legally allowed to administer and prescribe drugs

  6. they are more qualified than nurses but less qualified than doctors.  They can take a lot more responsibility than regular nurses.

  7. They are nurses who took a couple extra classes so they could prescribe prescriptions without a doctor.  In my opinion they are usually better than the actual doctor.
