  1. Phar Lap was an international legend winning thirty-seven of fifty-one starts. A chestnut gelding standing 17.1 hands tall with a girth measuring seventy-nine inches. He was not an instant success with four unlaces finishes before breaking his maiden on April 27, 1929 in the final start of the season. His 1929-30 season also began slowly but he came around to win thirteen of twenty seven starts including nine in a row before another second place finish at the end of the season. Included in his victories at the age of four was a three length win in the two-mile Melborn Cup carrying 138 pounds. Nicknamed "Red Terror" he continued to excell at age five losing only once while eighth in the Melborn Cup carrying 150 pounds giving some fifty pounds to the winner. The racing world was stunned by his mysterious death on April 5, 1932. The official cause was listed as colic, but ther was presence of arsenic in his system. The arsenics source was later traced to insecticide sprayed on plants by a farm employee. Phar Lap was mounted and now stands on display at the Museum of Victoria in Melborne

  2. back in the 30's there was a the great depression (look it up) in these times money was scarse, people were broke, but there was a horse who carried the weight of a nation people put what ever money they had on the red terror (phar-lap) some people lived on the income generated by betting on him!

in short he was a hero to the australian public!

you can look up his race stats and find what races he won, and how much money he earned.

if this is an assighment email me and i may be able to provide some gripping yarns, and facts about other great aussie champions!
