  1. There are 24 different time zones, measured with its origin called the International Date Line, which cuts through the Pacific Ocean's center, just near Hawaii.

    If you are in the military or meteorology, time zones are measured in UTC (Universal Time Code), or Zulu (Z) time.

    In Chicago, IL, for instance, 1900 Z means about 12 noon;

    2400 Z (also known as O Z) would mean something like 7 pm.

  2. Since this is a social studies question and NOT aviation or military, please use the term GMT - Greenwich Mean Time (instead of Zulu).  GMT is in the UK.  GMT is the beginning time zone and is designated with Zero.  If you live in NYC, your time zone is GMT + 5.  If GMT is 10:00 a.m., NYC is 5:00 a.m.  Time Zones are measured in single hours = 24 hours in one day.

  3. Since each time zone is 1 hour apart from the next time zone, there are 24 time zones on the earth (because of earth's rotation of 24 hours per day).

    Time zones are measured in longitudes.

    Since there are 180 East and 180 West longitudes, covering 24 hours, each time zone is 360/24 = 15 longitudes wide.
