  1. They're little thank-you tokens that guests are given. They're often edible (M&M's, jelly beans, etc) or else they're a small decorative trinket. Becoming more common is to give a donation to a charity in lieu of favours and to give cards announcing this.

  2. Little take-home gifts for the guests to commemorate your wedding day.

  3. Favors are small gifts that the bride and groom purchase to give out to each guest at the wedding.

Typically, they're very inexpensive and are the same for everyone, and usually involve something edible, like candies wrapped in tulle, ties with a ribbon. But more recently, they've gotten more creative, and things like personalized candy bars, caramel apples, personalized gum/mints, etc. are very common.

One of my favorite wedding favor websites is beau-coup.com:

There's also a small trend starting of not providing favors at all, as some guests tend to throw them away if it's not edible (i.e. little coasters shaped like hearts, heart-shaped keychains, etc., because while they seem useful, they're really not.

If the couple has an extremely large budget, the favors can be more practical and actually useful in real life, like leather luggage tags if you're having a destination wedding, for example.

But usually people try to stay in the $40-$10, even less, per favor for their wedding because the bride and groom are already paying for the guests' meal and drinks for the evening.

  4. usually little bells with bride and groom names on them, plastic wedding glasses, ink pens with couples name and wedding date on it, etc. Its just nice memento of the occasion.
