I find him to be a not so nice guy who needs to control his temper..however I need to write an essay on how Achilles is so heroic. Also, how do these things tie in to Greek ideals because Achilles was their national hero. Thanks! :)

  1.    Remember that the ideal of a hero was different then. While we tend to want our heroes today to not only kick butt, we seem to want them to be nice to kittens, little children, and not litter.

the Greeks were a lot more practical. They wanted leaders who could win battles, and wars. Here Achilles fit the bill. Physically powerful(Not even the Greater Ajax was his equal), fearless, not suffering from false modesty, and generous in his gift giving and awarding of prizes.

Examples of these virtues are found in his battle with the river god, with Hector, with how he treated Nestor, and even Priam later. The final chapters with the games for Patroclus demonstrate his wealth and generosity, the wealth derived from his prowess in battle against the Trojans. It's interesting how such virtues have been held in esteem in other generations. Look at the saga of Beowulf for example. And note that despite his extreme pride, he was not seriously accused of hubris. the fact he could walk the walk as well as talk the talk earned him the right to be proud.

      Hope that helps a little.
