  1. Water pollution - any contamination of water that lessens its value to organisms.

    By Source:

    - Point-sourse water pollution (sewage pipe, diary waste)

    - Non-point sourse water pollution (septic tank leak, runoff from farm land)

    By Chemical Type:

    - Sediment pollution (high level of suspended sediment)

    - Inorganic nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus)

    - Thermal pollution (hot water from power and chemical plants)

    - Desease-produsing organisms (cholera, typhoid fever, polio...)

    - Toxic organic compounds (ddt, pcb)

    - Heavy-metal pollution (lead, mercury from mines and power plants)

  2. Sewage spills, fertilizer runoff, petroleum spills, boating fuel, various metals (cadmium, copper, zinc, iron), trash dumping (ever seen cans or beer bottles)

You might also argue that byproducts of certain microorganisms causes pollution.  For example, when there's a lot of organic material input into a lake, the photosynthetic algae eat it all up and produce more organic matter.  The organisms directly below the algae eat this and deplete the lower regions of oxygen, since they require O2 for food digestion.  This leads to a buildup of decaying organic waste at the bottom of the lake.

  3. Two of the largest sources are human waste (sewage) and farm runoff.  In other words, all humans cause it.  Industrial is very highly regulated.  If you want to see the major categories of industrial sources, see the references.

  4. Russia, at least the whole former U.S.S.R. area.  Its rivers have distustingly high amounts of radioactive materials, oil and other fossil fuels, mercury, ehylene glycol, and other chemical waste, toxic waste, and factory chemicals.

    GAH!!!

  5. chemical

The water used in nuclear power

    diseased water
