  1. AGN (active galactic nuclei) are the very bright and energetic centres of distant galaxies - quasars are one form of AGN, so are blazars.

    The radiation from AGN is believed to be the result of the accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole at the centre of the host galaxy.  AGN are the most luminous and persistent sources of electromagnetic radiation in the universe.

    They can be seen billions of light years away - so far that their host galaxies aren't visible to Earth-based instruments.
