  1. Cells that are only partly differentiated. Bone marrow contains some of these cells. They can become many different types of cells, but only certain types of connective tissue. They do not have the ability to become a liver cell or brain cell, etc... As opposed to embryonic stem cells which can become any cell in the body.

  2. Adult stem cells are cells that aren't specified to a certain part of your body. For example, muscle cells and heart cells are *not* stem cells, because these cells each have specialized to do a specific task. The heart cells pump blood; the muscle cells stretch, these cells can't trade spots, and do work for one another.

On the other hand, stem cells are cells that haven't turned into these specific cells; you can think of them as a fresh box of clay, that hasn't been molded into anything yet. These cells can then develop into specialized cells, like heart and muscle cells. Thus, adult stem cells can help repair damaged tissue through replacement, or replace dying cells.

As far as the location of adult stem cells, no one knows for sure yet. They're found throughout the body, and can arise anywhere. Scientists can only  isolate them by getting a sample of tissue, and find them through various processes. A lot of research is currently being done on adult stem cells, as there is still a lot that we do not know about them.

  4. Stem cells are cells that have not taken on the characteristics of a specific cell, such as a skin cell, bone cell, brain cell, heart cell, etc. They are used to be made into different cells in order to help with various diseases.

Adult stem cells are stem cells that are harvested from adults, such as the cells found in bone marrow. These cells can't be made into other cells quite so easily.

Embryonic stem cells are taken from embryos which are composed of cells that haven't differentiated into different cells yet. These cells are able to made into anything very easily.

However, adult stem cells have so far cured many different diseases. Embryonic stem cells have cured nothing; they haven't yet made it beyond lab rats.

  5. Adult stem cells are stem cells that are found in the adult body (and hence the name adult stem cell). However, adult stem cell differs from embryonic stem cell (the one that has lots of controversy around it) in that adult stem cells are more differentiated than embryonic stem cells. So, adult stem cells can only differentiated into less cell types than embryonic stem cells (for example, some adult stem cells may only be able to differentiate into white/red blood cells while embryonic stem cells can differentiate into all cell types, e.g, muscle, nerve cells). Moreover, adult stem cells are hard to found in the adult body!!!
