What are advantages and disadvantages for a skinner box?

  1. The Skinner box is a controlled environment that can be used to test animal behaviour in relation to various stimuli.

    Advantages

    - allows for controlled experiments (you can eliminate external factors that might affect your results)

    - can be modified for use with different animals (rats, pigeons etc)

    - allows for experiments testing for either classical or instrumental conditioning

    Disadvantages

    - animal is not in it's natural environment (hence limited external validity)

    - possibly unethical (depending on what you moral stance on electrocuting animals is)
