  1. lower emissions,no mixing of gas and oil, great gas mileage, usually quieter.

one drawback to them when compared to a two stroke- they have very small jet's in the carburaters. this is where the inproved gas mileage comes from-this causes them to stop up more easily when stored for a while resulting in the carbs having to be cleaned out. this can be dealt with by running them at least once a month. use muffs on them if you don't use you boat very often.-also use a gas stabilizer in your tank

or you could disconnect the gas line from the motor at the landing and let the motor use all of the gas up in the carbs- be sure that the boat is loaded on the trailer but still in the water before you do this(never run the motor with the water pump intake out of the water) this method was recomended by the dealership to me.

  2. The jury is still out on that but 4 stroke require a lot more maintence than 2 stroke. Johnson/Evinrude outboard has come out with 2 stroke than emmit less emmisions than 4 stroke and dont require less maintenance.A marine mechanic once described 4 stroke engines as "Fat and Lazy" It's you decision...Steve

  3. 2-stroke:

have been around and are good, reliable engines

    lighter

    cheaper

    Noiser

    use more gas.

    more emissions

    are illegal in some places

    4-stroke:

    Quieter

Better fuel economy - about 2/3 or better than 2-stroke

    low emissions

become more accepted and legal in places where 2-strokes are

    Much heavier

    more complex to maintain

    more expensive

  4. They offer a smoother operation, better fuel economy, better power and less emmissions, as well as being longer lasting, require less maintenance and are simpler to service and work on.

Other than that, not much ;0)

  5. Quiter, and less emissions are probably the ONLY definite advantages.  4 strokes are way more expensive to buy, way more expensive to fix, break down more often, have way more complicated parts, and usually do not have the same power as a comparable 2 stroke.  I would go with 2 stroke, with a direct oil injection only - I would not want to pre-mix my oil/fuel everytime!

I have an I/O, 5.7L anyway, so I'll wave to you behind me!

  6. 4 strokes are cleaner, more fuel-efficient and quieter than a two stroke. 4 strokes require much less maintenance than 2 strokes. However, 4 strokes have camshafts, valves, rockers e.t.c which 2 strokes do not have, making them heavier and more complicated than 2 strokes.

  7. Yes they are quieter, put out less emissions and have better torque characteristics, but they are much more complicated then a 2 stroke considering all the valve gear, lube system etc. They also do not make as much hp as an equal size 2 stroke and are heavier but last longer since they are not as stressed.

  8. they tend to be quieter, produce less emissions, and give you more power. Also, you get rid of the annoying mix your fuel routine.

  9. Mostly technology.  2 strokes have been the same 4ever. 4 strokes have been evolving for the past 15 years and are now the way to go.  Like everyone else says they are much cleaner, eaiser to use (just gas and go) and more reliable if you keep on on scheduled maintanience.  The major downfall is weight and consiquences of poor maintanience.  If you dont keep up on them expect valves to get bent, crappy running from out of timing, and etc.  If you treat a 4 stroke how its suppose to be treated it will last 4 ever.  2-stroke is past technology. Soon these engines will be fased out.  Go 4 stroke.
