Petroleum is inexpensive (at least now, compared to everything else).  Liquid hydrocarbons are the most efficient way to transport and distribute energy.  Compared to coal, most petroleum fuels are clean burning, natural gas in particular.

The energy density of petroleum fuels is why they are used for transportation (automobiles, airplanes, ships).

The clean burning is why they are used instead of coal for electrical power generation.  Coal is extremely dirty and requires A LOT of emissions clean-up.

With Iraq sitting on enormous pools of petroleum that are easy to get to, some places it just seeps from the ground, you can see why other energy sources are not as competitive.
